Gel nail polish is facing restrictions in Europe due to new safety regulations. Starting today, several types are banned because they contain certain chemicals linked to health concerns. Authorities pointed out that these substances may cause skin irritation, allergic reactions, or long-term health risks.
“The European Union has much stricter cosmetic regulations compared to the U.S.,” experts note. While Europe acts quickly on potential risks, the U.S. often allows products to remain on the market until stronger evidence emerges.
The ban targets formulas with specific ingredients, especially those that become hazardous when exposed to UV light during the curing process. Officials stressed that the goal is not to ban gel nails entirely but to push brands toward safer alternatives.
In contrast, American consumers will still find the same products on shelves. “The FDA does not regulate cosmetics in the same proactive way as the EU,” highlighting a major difference in policy.
For now, European nail salons and beauty enthusiasts must adjust to new, reformulated options, while in the U.S., the debate continues over whether similar action should be taken.
