A Ukrainian refugee, 23-year-old Iryna Zarutska, was killed in a random stabbing on a Charlotte, North Carolina train on August 22. She had fled the war with her family and was sitting quietly on the CATS Blue Line when suspect Decarlos Brown Jr. suddenly stabbed her in the neck. “Footage from the train showed Zarutska had just been looking at her phone and listening to her headphones.” She died at the scene.
Brown, who has a history of criminal activity and mental health issues, was arrested immediately and charged with first-degree murder. He was denied bond and ordered to undergo a competency evaluation, with his next court date set for September 19.
When asked about the case on September 7, President Donald Trump called it “horrible,” but admitted, “I haven’t heard … when did this happen?” He added he would be briefed, saying, “I’ll know all about it by tomorrow morning.”
An obituary remembered Zarutska as a “gifted and passionate artist” who dreamed of becoming a veterinary assistant. It added, “Though she enjoyed adventures… Iryna was also a homebody at heart, happiest when surrounded by family and loved ones.”
