Authorities confirmed Sunday that Tyler Robinson, 22, the suspect in the assassination of Charlie Kirk, is under “special watch” at the Utah County Sheriff’s Department. This status is used for inmates considered at risk due to “mental health concerns, behavioral issues, or violent crimes.” Officials said Robinson made possible suicidal remarks during or after his arrest.
He is housed in a special unit for close monitoring while undergoing a mental health evaluation, which “may take several days.” Afterward, he will be classified for long-term housing. The sheriff’s office stressed that he will remain under observation by medical, mental health, and custody staff to ensure safety and treatment if needed.
Robinson is accused of fatally shooting Charlie Kirk, 31, during a Turning Point USA event at Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah. Kirk, a conservative activist and father of two, was struck in the neck by a rifle round and later died.
The suspect was arrested after a 33-hour manhunt involving federal and local agencies. A breakthrough came when Robinson’s father recognized him in FBI surveillance images and alerted authorities.
Robinson faces charges of aggravated murder and obstruction of justice. The investigation continues.
