President Donald Trump’s latest UK visit ended with an unexpected scare when his helicopter was forced to land early. According to the White House press secretary, this was due to a “minor hydraulic issue.”
On September 18, Trump had concluded meetings with Prime Minister Keir Starmer at Chequers, and the day before he and Melania met King Charles III and Queen Camilla at Windsor Castle. While en route to London Stansted Airport, Marine One diverted to Luton Airport, 54 miles away. Karoline Leavitt explained the landing was made “out of an abundance of caution,” and the Trumps later “safely boarded the support helicopter.” Emergency services were already waiting on the tarmac.
During the Windsor meeting, body language expert Judi James noted King Charles showed “a moment of suppressed tetchiness” as Trump lingered with guardsmen. “The King edges up to Trump, his hands clenching and unclenching in a gesture of impatience, and he places a hand on Trump’s back to get him moving along again,” she said.
Charles even offered what James described as “a solicitous bow… an incredibly unusual act of self-lowering of the King’s status.”
