Since becoming king, Charles III has worked to make the monarchy more modern and approachable. His warmth was clear during Donald and Melania Trump’s second state visit to the UK on September 16.
The Trumps were first welcomed by Prince William and Princess Kate before being received at Windsor Castle by King Charles and Queen Camilla. While Trump and Charles spent most of the day together, Melania joined engagements with both Camilla and Kate.
A lighthearted moment drew attention when, according to lipreader Nicola Hickling, Trump greeted the king with: “How are you doing, it’s a pleasure, Your Majesty. Thank you for inviting me.” Charles then turned to Melania and joked, “I do hope the wind doesn’t blow away your hat,” which made the former First Lady laugh openly.
Melania’s outfit also stood out. Her gray Dior suit and wide-brimmed purple hat were described as “a nod to royal tradition” and a strategic style choice. Commentators also noticed the match between her hat and Trump’s purple tie, suggesting deliberate symbolism.
The visit featured royal pageantry, from the Guard of Honour to a banquet at Windsor, showing how charm, fashion, and ceremony shaped this diplomatic occasion.
