David Letterman has spoken out about Jimmy Kimmel’s suspension following remarks he made on Jimmy Kimmel Live! about Charlie Kirk’s assassination and Donald Trump’s reaction to it.
Trump celebrated the move on Truth Social, writing: “Great News for America: The ratings-challenged Jimmy Kimmel Show is CANCELLED,” and mocked Kimmel as having “zero talent.” He also urged NBC to drop Jimmy Fallon and Seth Meyers, calling them “two total losers.”
Letterman, speaking at the Atlantic Festival, revealed Kimmel texted him after the suspension. “I have heard from Jimmy,” he said, joking that Kimmel was “sitting up in bed taking nourishment. He’s gonna be fine.” He called the suspension “ridiculous,” adding: “You can’t go around firing somebody because you’re fearful or trying to suck up to an authoritarian criminal administration in the Oval Office.”
Other late-night hosts defended Kimmel. Stephen Colbert and Jon Stewart criticized the suspension, while Fallon described Kimmel as a “decent, funny and loving guy” and said he hopes he returns.
Though Jimmy Kimmel Live! is suspended, Sinclair Broadcasting Group stated it may resume after talks with ABC. They also demanded Kimmel apologize to the Kirk family and make a “meaningful personal donation” to them and Turning Point USA.
