At Charlie Kirk’s funeral in Glendale, Arizona, tens of thousands gathered at State Farm Stadium on September 21 to honor the 31-year-old activist, who was shot earlier this month while speaking at a Utah university. Due to the large crowds, speeches were delivered behind a protective screen, and TSA-style security was in place.
Attention quickly shifted to Erika Kirk, Charlie’s widow, who chose not to wear black. On social media, many questioned her choice: “That’s odd that she is not wearing black as if in mourning” and “Erika is out of pocket for not putting on mourning colours at these events.” Others recalled traditions of widows wearing black for extended periods.
The explanation came from the “Fight for Charlie” website, which specified a dress code of “Sunday Best” in red, white, and blue, colors of the American flag. Erika wore all white, while Donald Trump followed the code with a blue suit and red tie.
Taking the stage before Trump, Erika said she forgives her husband’s alleged killer and vowed to continue his mission: “I love you Charlie, baby. And I will make you proud… every part of our work will become greater.”
