Charlie Kirk, co-founder of Turning Point USA, was shot while hosting a debate at Utah Valley University on September 10. Speaking before around 3,000 attendees, he was struck in the neck, prompting chaos as the crowd fled. Emma Pitts, a reporter at the event, recalled: “We all dropped to the ground… and then everyone around us got up and started running.”
Authorities arrested 22-year-old Tyler Robinson of Utah, who allegedly fired from a rooftop about 200 yards away. Robinson faces charges including aggravated murder, felony discharge of a firearm, violent offense in the presence of a child, and obstruction of justice. Prosecutors announced they will pursue the death penalty.
Videos circulated online showing Kirk dropping the mic and collapsing as blood poured from his wound. Neuropsychologist Derek Van Schaik analyzed the footage to clarify his final movements. Some suggested Kirk’s arms moved due to “decorticate posturing,” but Van Schaik said it was “an involuntary defensive reflex.”
He explained massive blood loss causes rapid unconsciousness, not rigid posturing. Using digital timers, Van Schaik found Kirk stayed conscious for only four-tenths of a second after being shot.
“In his final moments, there was no panic, no dread,” Van Schaik concluded. “It was neurologically impossible for him to realize what had happened—only an abrupt blackout.”
