Nexstar Media Group and Sinclair Broadcast Group announced they will stop airing “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” on their ABC affiliates after the host made controversial remarks about the death of conservative commentator Charlie Kirk. Kimmel had incorrectly claimed the suspect was linked to the MAGA movement. Nexstar said the move reflects a commitment to “maintaining respectful public discourse,” while Sinclair will replace the program with news content.
The backlash grew because law enforcement confirmed the alleged shooter, Tyler Robinson, had left-leaning views and “no known ties to conservative political groups.” Disney suspended the show, calling the comments “ill-timed and insensitive.”
Inside the show, doubts remain about its future. A staff member said even a public apology might not be enough, adding Disney could decide to cancel and replace the show with reruns.
Reports also suggest FCC Chairman Brendan Carr is reviewing whether an investigation is needed. While he did not confirm an inquiry, he said the agency is proceeding carefully.
The future of “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” is now uncertain, caught between political backlash, media criticism, and affiliate resistance. Critics argue the false claim deepened divisions, while supporters see the reaction as an overreach.
