The Art of the Smash Burger

Burgers, the iconic American comfort food, have undergone countless transformations over the years. One of the most celebrated iterations is the smash burger – a mouthwatering creation that has taken the culinary world by storm. The secret to its success lies in the simplicity of its preparation, allowing the quality of the ingredients and the cooking technique to shine. Let’s delve into the world of smash burgers and uncover the keys to crafting this delectable dish.

Ingredients:

  1. Ground Beef: Choose a high-fat content ground beef, preferably around 80/20 lean-to-fat ratio, to ensure a juicy and flavorful burger.
  2. Salt and Pepper: Keep it simple with a generous sprinkle of salt and pepper. These basic seasonings allow the natural flavors of the beef to shine.
  3. Buns: Opt for soft, yet sturdy buns that can hold up to the juiciness of the burger. Brioche or potato buns are excellent choices.
  4. Cheese: Classic choices include American, cheddar, or Swiss. The cheese should be added during the last moments of cooking to achieve that perfect melt.
  5. Condiments and Toppings: Ketchup, mustard, mayonnaise, lettuce, tomatoes, onions, and pickles are traditional choices. Customize your toppings to suit your taste preferences.

Cooking Method:

  1. Preheat the Griddle: Ensure your griddle or flat-top surface is piping hot. A well-heated surface is crucial for achieving that coveted crust.
  2. Divide and Conquer: Portion the ground beef into small, loosely packed balls. The size will depend on your preference, but aim for around 2 to 4 ounces per ball.
  3. Smash and Season: Place a ball of ground beef onto the hot griddle and immediately press it down with a spatula to create a thin patty. Season with salt and pepper.
  4. Crisp and Flip: Allow the patty to sear for a minute or two until the edges turn crispy and brown. Flip the patty, add cheese, and let it cook for another minute until the cheese melts.
  5. Assemble: Transfer the patty onto a waiting bun and add your desired condiments and toppings.
