A Sunday service in Grand Blanc Township, Michigan, turned tragic when a gunman attacked the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, leaving at least five dead — including the shooter — and more than eight injured.
Police said 40-year-old Thomas Jacob Sanford drove a truck into the church doors before opening fire with an assault rifle. He then “poured gasoline and set the building ablaze.” Two victims died in the fire, others from gunfire, and one later succumbed to injuries at the hospital. Authorities warned more victims may be found in the wreckage.
Officers arrived “within 30 seconds of the first 911 call,” but the blaze destroyed much of the roof. Federal agents from the ATF are investigating the “targeted act of violence.”
Sanford, a Marine veteran who served in Iraq, was fatally shot by police. Reports say he had a wife and a young son battling a rare medical condition. A fundraiser for his family had raised $3,000 before the tragedy.
Community leaders described the attack as a violation of sacred space. Vigils and prayers are being organized as families mourn, survivors heal, and residents seek strength to rebuild faith and unity.
