“From Human To Cat-Man”: The

Dennis Avner, known as Stalking Cat, became famous for transforming himself to look like a tiger. Unlike others who sought beauty, Avner believed “human identity extended beyond mere physical appearance.” His tattoos, sharpened ears, and facial surgeries reflected a deep spiritual mission, not vanity.

Born in Flint, Michigan, Avner was fascinated by Native American traditions and developed a lifelong connection with tigers. After serving in the Navy and working as a computer technician, he began altering his body to “embody the spirit of a tiger,” earning his nickname Catman.

Through painful procedures, he sharpened his teeth into fangs, tattooed his body, and even wore whiskers. Despite health risks, Avner said he was honoring ancient beliefs that humans could connect with animal spirits.

His transformations were done by body modification artist Havoc, and he became part of a community that included figures like Lizardman and Tigress Katzen. Moving to an artist island with friends, he embraced the furry subculture and promoted creative freedom.

In 2012, Avner died by suicide at 54. Those close to him remembered his kindness and conviction. His legacy challenges society’s ideas of identity and reminds us that “the pursuit of one’s true essence… is an act of courage.”
