Older drivers over 70 risk being unable to drive legally if they forget to renew their licences, according to the DVLA and Age UK. The charity warned: “If your licence expires and you don’t apply for a new one, you won’t legally be allowed to drive.”
The DVLA sends a D46P renewal form 90 days before a driver’s 70th birthday. Age UK reminded motorists: “Don’t forget to apply for any extra categories of vehicle covered on your old licence if you still want to be able to drive them.” Failing to do so limits them to driving only cars.
Renewal is free and can be completed online or by post. Those turning 70 within the next 90 days can renew early to avoid delays. Applying online is quicker, while postal renewals “can take up to 3 weeks,” Age UK noted.
The Labour government stated that new driving licence photocards typically arrive within three weeks, though delays may occur if medical or personal details require checks.
The key message is clear: older motorists must renew their licences on time, or, as Age UK cautioned, they “won’t be allowed to drive.”
