Jimmy Carter, the former president, leads a simple life in a $ 210,000 home and shops at the neighborhood General Dollar.

Former President Jimmy Carter, now 97, breaks the mold of post-presidential extravagance. Opting for a simple life in Plains, Georgia, where he was born and raised, Carter and his wife continue to reside in the home they built in the 1960s. Married for 76 years, their connection is evident in their enduring bond.

Carter’s early life in a town of 600 shaped him, and his desire to join the military eventually led him to meet his future wife, Rosalynn. After leaving the Navy to care for his ailing father, Carter returned to Plains, where he initially built a home for his growing family.

Post-presidency, Carter stands out for his humility. He states, “I never aspired to be rich, popular, or live in a mansion that cost millions of dollars.” Facing financial difficulties, he sold his business but discovered a love for writing, sustaining a comfortable life with his pension and book sales.

Carter’s frugality extends to his lifestyle; he flies commercially, buys clothing from Dollar General, and keeps his budget lean. Despite financial struggles, the Carters engage in philanthropy, contributing to the construction and renovation of over 4,300 homes worldwide.

Known for giving without expecting return, Carter cherishes simple pleasures like home repairs with his wife. Their cozy home reflects a life well-lived. Carter’s commitment to his roots in Plains and his gratitude for a supportive community exemplify a tranquil existence that prioritizes fulfillment over opulence.
