Romanian football is mourning the loss of 19-year-old Luca Manolache, a talented player for Metaloglobus București who died after battling a mysterious illness. Once seen as “a gifted footballer with a kind heart,” Luca’s promising career ended abruptly when health problems forced him to retire in 2024.
He had suffered from dizziness, fatigue, and bloody stools, but despite medical tests, “the cause of his symptoms remained unclear.” On February 28, 2025, while out with a relative, he fell seriously ill and called his mother, saying, “Mum, Mum, I can’t do it anymore. Do you think I’m dying?” Moments later, he passed away.
An autopsy revealed he had “drowned in his own stomach acid after vomiting blood,” shocking his family and the Romanian sports community. The club expressed heartbreak, saying Luca’s “dedication on the pitch and warm presence off it made him beloved by teammates and coaches alike.”
Tributes from fans and players flooded social media, calling his death “a tragic reminder of how fragile life can be.” His case has also raised awareness about the need for thorough medical care for young athletes.
Metaloglobus plans to honor Luca’s memory with a moment of silence and a scholarship bearing his name.
