The rock world is mourning the loss of Marcie Free, the powerhouse vocalist behind King Kobra, Signal, and Unruly Child, who has died at 71. Her bandmate Jay Schellen confirmed the news, writing, “Marcie was a marvel to behold. A voice that had no limits and no equal… I’m gutted and can’t say much more.”
Born Mark Edward Free in 1954, Marcie began performing at 19, eventually joining drummer Carmine Appice to form King Kobra in 1983. With hits like Ready to Strike and Thrill of a Lifetime, her soaring vocals made her one of rock’s most distinctive voices. She later joined Signal and then formed Unruly Child in 1990, whose debut album became a cult favorite.
In 1993, Free came out as transgender, calling her transition “a decision between life and death.” Though she lost much of her career momentum, she said living as Mark “would have died for sure.”
After battling alcoholism and finding faith, she reunited with her band in 2009, releasing several albums and reclaiming her place in music.
Tributes poured in from fans and peers. As Schellen said, “Marcie was always an Angel — now you have your wings.”
