The jugular veins in your neck carry blood from the head back to the heart. When these veins suddenly bulge — a condition known as jugular vein distension (JVD) — it can be a serious sign. According to the Cleveland Clinic, “JVD is a physical exam finding that may indicate increased pressure in the right side of the heart.”
This symptom often points to underlying heart or lung problems. Healthline explains, “Right-sided heart failure is the most common cause of JVD,” but it can also result from valve disease, pulmonary hypertension, or fluid buildup around the heart.
Experts warn not to ignore visible neck-vein swelling. “Bulging neck veins can signal life-threatening conditions like cardiac tamponade or superior vena cava obstruction,” notes Medical News Today.
If JVD appears alongside shortness of breath, chest pain, or leg swelling, seek medical help immediately.
Treatment focuses on the root cause — “managing heart failure, repairing valves, or relieving vein pressure,” says Healthgrades. While JVD itself isn’t a disease, it’s a clear signal that something deeper needs urgent attention.
