If You’re Going To Eat At A Restaurant This Weekend, Beware Of “Fried Rice Syndrome”

Germaine Mobley, 62, of Texas, a food enthusiast, recently faced a harrowing experience after consuming fried rice at a Dallas restaurant. Within hours, she fell severely ill, experiencing breathing difficulties and fearing for her life. Mobley unknowingly suffered from “fried rice syndrome,” caused by the bacterium Bacillus cereus, which thrives when rice is left at room temperature for too long.

Culinary expert Celeste Rogers explained the risk, stating, “We have a max of six hours to cool that rice.” Mobley, who spent over a week in intensive care, is now determined to raise awareness about this serious issue. Her attorney, Kathryn Knotts, emphasized the severity: “‘Fried rice syndrome’ sounds like a joke, but it’s very serious.”

Despite Mobley linking her illness to Asian King Buffet, the restaurant denies any responsibility. This incident serves as a cautionary tale, urging both consumers and chefs to prioritize food safety to prevent similar health crises.
