Donald Trump didn’t stay silent after New York City’s new mayor, Zohran Mamdani, took aim at him during his victory speech — setting off what could be a heated political rivalry.
At 34, Mamdani made history as the city’s first Muslim and South Asian mayor. In Brooklyn, he told cheering supporters, “New York will remain a city of immigrants, built by immigrants, powered by immigrants, and, as of tonight, led by an immigrant.” He then added, “If anyone can show a nation betrayed by Donald Trump how to defeat him, it is the city that gave rise to him.”
Then came his viral line: “Donald Trump, since I know you’re watching, I have four words for you: turn the volume up!”
Trump hit back on Fox News, calling Mamdani’s words “angry toward me” and “very dangerous.” He warned, “He has to be a little bit respectful of Washington, because if he’s not, he doesn’t have a chance of succeeding.”
During the campaign, Trump had labeled Mamdani a “communist” and threatened to limit federal funding if he won. Neither man shows signs of backing down — a clash that may soon stretch far beyond New York’s borders.
