A tragic incident at Oregon’s Green Valley Zoo left zookeeper Michael Torres, 32, critically injured on August 23, 2025. Torres, “known by colleagues for his steady presence and deep affection for the animals in his care,” was performing his usual morning duties when the accident occurred.
Michael had entered the enclosure of Bai Yun, a seven-year-old panda he had cared for for years. The normally gentle panda “appeared unusually unsettled that morning,” and surveillance footage showed signs of nervous pacing before the sudden attack.
Zoo staff acted quickly, pulling Michael to safety and rushing him to a nearby hospital, where he remains in critical condition. Colleagues described the scene as “heartbreaking,” given the trust and consistency that usually define his work with Bai Yun.
Veterinarians and behavioral specialists are reviewing the panda’s sudden behavior, considering stress, illness, environmental disruption, or instinctive reactions. As a precaution, Bai Yun’s habitat has been temporarily closed to the public.
The incident has shaken staff, volunteers, and the wider zoo community. Green Valley Zoo emphasized it “will remain fully transparent as investigations continue,” while supporting Michael, his family, and ensuring Bai Yun’s well-being. Messages of support for Michael have poured in from across the country.
