Major U.S. Airport on Red Alert After Passenger Diagnosed With Extremely Contagious Disease

The first confirmed measles case involved an adult who had received one dose of the MMR vaccine, which may have provided partial protection. The individual developed symptoms, including a rash on April 25, and was later confirmed through testing. As noted, “two doses are generally required to provide optimal immunity.” Since diagnosis, the patient “has been isolating at home to prevent further spread of the disease.”

Days later, a second adult from the same Illinois county was diagnosed. This person sought care at a local hospital on April 28, where staff quickly recognized the symptoms and placed the patient in isolation. Officials say they have not confirmed a link between the two cases, but the timing raises concerns about possible community spread. The second patient’s vaccination status is still unknown.

These cases come amid a rise in measles scares near major U.S. airports. With international travel increasing, experts warn that diseases once considered controlled are reappearing. Measles is especially dangerous because “the virus can remain airborne for up to two hours after an infected person has left the area,” putting unvaccinated people at high risk.

Authorities are urging anyone who passed through Terminal 1 at O’Hare on April 22 or 23 to watch for symptoms. Early signs include fever, cough, runny nose, and red, watery eyes, followed by a rash. Symptoms usually appear within 7 to 14 days, but can take up to 21 days.

Health officials are tracing contacts and stressing prevention. The MMR vaccine offers “about 93% protection after one dose and 97% after two doses.” The CDC emphasizes that vaccination remains the strongest defense against measles outbreaks.
