Broadway Actress, 25, Passes Away in New Jersey Home; Boyfriend Charged

The theater community is grieving the tragic loss of former Broadway performer Imani Dia Smith, whose death has shaken both the arts world and the public. Smith, 25, was found unresponsive at a residence in Edison, New Jersey, in an incident that authorities say occurred on Sunday. Emergency responders were called to the home and transported Smith to a nearby hospital, where she was later pronounced dead. What began as a medical emergency quickly escalated into a criminal investigation.

Officials from the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office have confirmed that Smith’s death is being treated as a homicide. Her boyfriend, Jordan D. Jackson-Small, has been taken into custody and charged in connection with the case. Prosecutors allege he faces first-degree murder charges, along with additional offenses involving child welfare and unlawful possession of a weapon. Law enforcement agencies have stated that the investigation remains active and ongoing.

Both the Edison Police Department and the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office have declined to release further details at this time. Authorities emphasized that more information will be disclosed through the legal process as the case progresses. The lack of details has added to the shock and heartbreak felt by those who knew Smith and followed her career.

Smith was widely recognized for her early success on Broadway, most notably for portraying Young Nala in Disney’s The Lion King from 2011 to 2012. The role showcased her vocal talent and stage presence at a young age. Colleagues and friends have described her as passionate, creative, and dedicated to her craft.

In recent years, Smith focused much of her life on motherhood. She was the mother of a three-year-old son, whom family members say she deeply loved and prioritized above all else. Those close to her remember her as a caring and devoted parent.

Following her death, Smith’s family launched a GoFundMe campaign to assist with funeral costs, counseling services, and other essential expenses. In their message, they described her as vibrant and loving, thanking supporters for their compassion while requesting privacy as they grieve and care for her child.
