High School Football Coach Fired After Baptizing Players

In a surprising turn of events at Tattnall County High School in Georgia, Coach Isaac Ferrell faced termination for baptizing nearly two dozen football players. The incident, which occurred on school grounds with Pastor Gary Few, drew the ire of the Freedom From Religion Foundation (FFRF). The FFRF demanded an investigation and immediate action, arguing against religious coercion in school-sponsored activities.

The FFRF attorney, Chris Line, insisted that coaches should refrain from pushing personal religious beliefs onto students. The controversy led to Coach Ferrell’s dismissal as a coach, although he retained his teaching position. The school superintendent cited an unrelated incident after a November football game as the reason for termination.

While some parents supported the baptisms, emphasizing their children’s voluntary participation, the community remained divided. Latifa Johnson, a parent, defended Coach Ferrell, highlighting the positive impact of teaching Christian values to students. The incident raises questions about the balance between personal beliefs and school-sponsored activities.
