WOMAN ADOPTED THE CHILD OF THE EX OF HER HUSBAND

Ohio resident Christie Werts, 48, gained attention for adopting her husband Wesley’s late ex-wife’s newborn, Levi, to prevent him from entering foster care. Christie, familiar with the foster system, married Wesley in 2018, blending their families. After Wesley’s ex-wife’s tragic death, Christie decided to adopt Levi, stating, “Having been a foster child myself, I didn’t want him going through that system.”

The adoption process was complex, requiring the family to move from Ohio to Texas for the official fostering before adoption. The 16-month journey had its challenges, but Christie expressed her immediate connection with Levi, emphasizing the need to protect him.

With Levi legally part of the family, Christie believes their journey was divinely planned. She encourages aspiring adoptive parents to prioritize a strong relationship and treat all children equally. Reflecting on foster care adoption, Christie notes its challenges, concluding, “Adoption is about the genuine desire to love and care for a child. The system isn’t perfect, but you must take it one day at a time.”
