Actor Gary Sinise shared the devastating news that his son, McCanna Anthony “Mac” Sinise, has died at the age of 33 after a long battle with cancer. The announcement was made on the Gary Sinise Foundation website and on Sinise’s Instagram, where he confirmed that Mac passed away after fighting a rare cancer called chordoma.
Mac was diagnosed on August 8, 2018, just months after his mother, Moira, was diagnosed with stage three breast cancer. While Moira’s treatment was successful, Mac’s illness progressed, eventually taking away his mobility. Gary Sinise described the loss in deeply emotional words, writing, “Like any family experiencing such a loss, we are heartbroken and have been managing as best we can. As parents, it is so difficult losing a child.”
He added, “Our family’s cancer fight lasted for 5 ½ years… While our hearts ache at missing him, we are comforted in knowing that Mac is no longer struggling.” Sinise emphasized his son’s strength, saying Mac “fought an uphill battle against a cancer that has no cure, but he never quit trying.”
Tributes poured in from fellow actors, including Angie Harmon, who wrote, “We are so sorry Gary. You & your family are deeply loved by so many,” and Alyssa Milano, who shared, “I’m so sorry, Gary. I’m praying for your family.”
Despite his illness, Mac lived a meaningful life. He worked with the Gary Sinise Foundation, played drums with his father’s Lt. Dan Band, and completed an album titled Resurrection & Revival shortly before his passing. Mac was laid to rest on January 5, leaving behind a legacy of resilience, music, and love.
