Former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin, convicted of George Floyd’s murder, was reportedly stabbed at a Tucson, Arizona federal prison on November 24th. The attack, details of which remain undisclosed, occurred in a facility facing security and staffing issues, according to the Associated Press. The victim received life-saving measures and was hospitalized. Chauvin, initially in a Minnesota maximum-security prison, was moved to Arizona in August 2022. Serving concurrent federal and state sentences totaling 43.5 years, his attorney, fearing Chauvin’s safety, had earlier expressed concerns about placing him in the general prison population due to potential targeting.

Quoting an AP source, “The medium-security prison has been plagued by security lapses and staffing shortages.” Chauvin’s transfer followed security concerns and underscores ongoing challenges in the nation’s correctional system.
