Here’s why you should always leave an upturned glass and a piece of paper in the sink before going on vacation

Before heading out on vacation, most of us unplug appliances, lock doors, and shut off the water. But there’s one small spot many people forget—the sink. Leaving it uncovered can invite musty smells, trapped moisture, or even unwanted bugs while you’re away.

When a home sits unused, especially in warm weather, the water in the pipes can dry out. That opens the door for sewer gases to rise through the drain and creates a damp, stagnant space insects love.

The fix is surprisingly simple—and free. Just place a paper towel over the drain and set an upside-down glass on top. This quick seal helps block odors, gases, and pests far more reliably than standard sink stoppers, which can loosen or shift over time.

Before you leave, give the sink a quick clean, flush the drain with hot vinegar, rinse, and add a swipe of lemon for freshness. Dry everything, cover the drain, and you’re done.

It’s a tiny habit that makes a big difference—because coming home should smell like comfort, not plumbing problems.
