Optical illusions reveal how easily our perception can be fooled, even when we are confident in what we see. A viral photo of six girls sitting on a couch left thousands confused because only five pairs of legs appear visible, making it seem as if one girl has no legs at all.
According to the Queensland Brain Institute, an optical illusion happens “when our brain and eyes try to communicate with each other, but the interpretation becomes a little mixed-up.” Our brains constantly rely on shortcuts, filling in missing details automatically. As the institute explains, “your brain might think something is moving when it isn’t,” a survival skill that can backfire when we look at photographs.
The image spread rapidly across social media because it looks impossible at first glance. Many viewers believed it was edited or staged, but the confusion comes entirely from perspective, overlapping bodies, and how our brains assign visible details to people.
One Reddit user clarified the trick by saying, “The second girl’s legs are behind the first girl’s legs.” Others pointed out that overlapping knees, socks, and body positions cause the brain to attach legs to the wrong person. Nothing is missing — the legs are simply hidden in plain sight.
This illusion went viral because it is simple, relatable, and frustrating until the moment it finally makes sense. It serves as a reminder that perception is not always reliable, and even obvious images can deceive the human brain.
