Kelly Clarkson says she’s ‘not above spanking’ her children for misbehavior

Discipline remains one of the most debated topics in parenting, and spanking continues to divide opinions. While some parents see it as a traditional way to teach boundaries and respect, many experts disagree. The American Academy of Pediatrics has repeatedly stated that spanking is ineffective and may cause long-term emotional and behavioral harm.

Despite this, some parents still defend the methods they experienced growing up. Kelly Clarkson has previously spoken openly about her childhood and her views on discipline, explaining that spanking was part of how she was raised. In past interviews, she acknowledged that while not everyone agrees with this approach, it shaped her understanding of structure and consequences as a parent.

Clarkson, who rose to fame after winning the first season of American Idol, is known for her honesty about motherhood. She has often shared both the joys and challenges of raising her two children, River Rose and Remy, emphasizing that parenting decisions are rarely simple or one-size-fits-all.

At the same time, child development experts continue to encourage alternatives such as positive reinforcement, clear communication, and consistent rules. These methods, they argue, help children develop self-control and emotional security without fear-based discipline.

The ongoing discussion highlights a broader truth: parenting practices evolve, and what was once common is increasingly being questioned as new research emerges.
