Wearing socks to bed is more than a comfort choice—it can actually improve sleep. “The body relies heavily on temperature regulation to transition from wakefulness to rest,” and keeping your feet warm can make a difference.
Research supported by the American Heart Association explains that warming the feet helps the body lower its core temperature efficiently. When feet are warm, blood vessels expand in a process called vasodilation, “allowing heat to move away from the body’s core,” which signals the brain that it’s time to sleep.
A 2023 study in Sleep Medicine found that people wearing socks to bed fell into deep sleep up to 20 percent faster than those who slept barefoot. Entering deep sleep sooner may “improve overall sleep quality and help the body recover more effectively overnight.”
Warm feet also improve blood flow, which can reduce nighttime leg cramps and muscle discomfort—common reasons people wake up during the night. Feeling physically warm and secure helps the nervous system relax, “making it easier to drift off and stay asleep.”
For those with Raynaud’s syndrome or cold-sensitive feet, wearing socks at night can be a practical, drug-free way to support rest and comfort.
