16-Year-Old Boy Dies Playing Ice Hockey

In a tragic incident during a Connecticut junior varsity hockey game, 10th grader Teddy Balkind lost his life after a collision, leaving the St. Luke’s School community in deep sorrow. The incident occurred at Brunswick School’s rink in Greenwich, where Teddy’s neck was accidentally cut by a skate. Calvin, an 18-year-old student, expressed the overwhelming sympathy felt by the community.

Reflecting on the rarity of such severe incidents, former youth hockey coach Ted Curtin mentioned that while lacerations can happen, they are exceptionally rare. Curtin discussed the limitations of neck guards, stating that they are recommended but not mandatory, and may not entirely eliminate the risk of injury. The Tri-State Area hockey community extends condolences to Teddy’s family, emphasizing the tragedy’s reminder of the inherent risks in the fast-paced game and the ongoing need for safety measures.
