Sam Elliott was too shy to speak to Katharine Ross – now, they’ve been married 40 years

Early Days and Hesitations: Some celebrity couples radiate perfection, and among them, Sam Elliott and Katharine Ross stand out. Their love story began on the set of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid in 1969. Despite admiration, Elliott hesitated to approach Ross, confessing, “I was a shadow on the wall, a glorified extra in a bar scene.” It took a decade for them to reunite during The Legacy, where their natural interaction sparked a connection.

Drawn to Each Other: Ross revealed her attraction to Elliott’s baritone voice, mustache, and rugged looks, saying, “We were working together, and one thing led to another. And here we are.”

Decades of Marriage: In 1984, their love culminated in marriage, becoming Ross’s fifth and Elliott’s first. Their daughter, Cleo Rose, arrived the same year. When asked about the secret to their enduring marriage, Elliott emphasized shared sensibility and working through challenges, stating, “You work past the [expletive]; you don’t walk away from it. That’s how relationships last.”

Gratitude and Commitment: Elliott expressed gratitude for achieving his desires of marriage, family, and a successful career, emphasizing their commitment: “We love each other, and we work at it. More importantly, it takes wanting to be married.”

Reflections on Love: Reflecting on their enduring relationship, Elliott shared with NPR, “I think, more importantly than anything, it takes wanting to be married.” Their story stands as a testament to enduring love, proving that celebrity unions can indeed be grounded and lasting.
