Huntington Beach, California, has taken a stance against potential COVID-19 mandates. The city council voted 4 to 3 to ban universal mask and vaccine mandates. The decision doesn’t affect private businesses, focusing on city buildings.

Huntington Beach Mayor Pro Tem Gracey Van Der Mark introduced the motion, expressing concern about past mask mandates, calling them “unnecessary restrictions.” She emphasized the importance of personal choice, saying, “If you want to wear a mask or get the vaccine to feel safe, you can.” Van Der Mark sees it as a matter of government overreach, stating that people should not be denied the right to work and support their families due to mandates.

However, not all council members supported this move. Councilman Dan Kalmick argued against it, highlighting the effectiveness of masks. He suggested the decision was politically motivated to gain support.
