Brazilian couple plants over 2 million trees to restore a destroyed forest

In the wake of the destruction of the rainforest surrounding their home, Brazilian photographer Sebastião Salgado and his wife, Lélia Deluiz Wanick Salgado, embarked on a mission to restore it. Returning from a global journalism career, Sebastião found his once-lush habitat reduced to a barren wasteland, triggering a profound depression. Lélia’s inspired idea to replant the forest took shape, leading the couple to plant over two million trees over several years.

Lélia’s determination drove the reforestation effort, with the couple witnessing the miraculous revival of the region. Sebastião reflects, “Then the trees came back, and all the insects and birds came back too. This place is alive again.” The couple’s resilience transformed their devastated home into a thriving ecosystem, showcasing the power of personal commitment in environmental restoration.
