In a heartbreaking interview, Eyewitness News reporter Kristin Thorne spoke with Gregg LaPenna, the devastated father and coach of 10-year-old Lazar, who tragically passed away during a Little League baseball game. LaPenna revealed that Lazar had been battling epilepsy, restricting him from most sports except baseball. The night before the incident, the family celebrated his birthday. LaPenna tearfully shared, “It’s just so sad.”

Lazar, a Mets enthusiast, was playing at Point Lookout Park when the game took a tragic turn. LaPenna recounted the moment, stating, “The last moment I saw was him standing on first, and he turned to me with a smile.” Despite CPR efforts, Lazar couldn’t be revived.

The community mourns, and Superintendent Dr. Jennifer Gallagher announced grief counselors for support. The Little League dedicates the season to Lazar, and tributes, like signed baseball caps, fill Point Lookout Park as a poignant reminder of a young life lost too soon.
