Man who witnessed American Airlines flight ‘splitting in half’ describes moment he saw ‘white flare’ during collision

On January 29, 2025, a fatal crash occurred near Washington, DC, when an American Airlines passenger jet (AA 5432) collided with a Black Hawk Sikorsky H-60 helicopter while the plane was preparing to land at Reagan National Airport. The incident took place at approximately 9 PM, with the jet carrying 60 passengers and 4 crew members and the helicopter having 3 people onboard. Both aircraft plunged into the Potomac River. Witnesses reported seeing a “white flare” before the crash, and emergency responders, including boats and helicopters, were dispatched. At least 19 bodies have been recovered, with more feared to be lost. Search efforts are hampered by freezing temperatures and low visibility. President Trump expressed condolences and praised first responders. American Airlines is working with authorities and offering support to affected families. The cause of the crash remains under investigation, and it is unclear if there are any survivors.
