Vertical Nail Ridges: Why They Happen More as You Get Older

Noticing thin lines running from the base to the tip of your nails can feel unusual, especially as they become more visible with age. For many people, this change begins after 40 and is usually harmless. In fact, “vertical nail ridges are usually linked to natural aging rather than illness.”

These lines, known as longitudinal ridges, develop as part of the body’s normal aging process. Just like skin forms fine lines, nails change over time. Nails rely on steady growth of keratin, and when this process slows, the surface can appear uneven. As explained, “nails are made mostly of keratin, and smooth growth depends on steady cell production.”

With age, the nail matrix under the cuticle produces cells less evenly, which can lead to ridges. Dryness can make them more noticeable since older nails tend to lose moisture more easily. Daily habits like frequent handwashing, sanitizer use, and exposure to cleaning products can also worsen dryness and highlight these lines.

Other factors may play a role as well. Minor nutritional gaps, changes in circulation, or hormonal shifts can affect nail texture. However, if ridges appear suddenly or alongside other unusual symptoms, it’s wise to consult a healthcare professional.

In most cases, simple care is enough. Keeping nails and cuticles moisturized, wearing gloves during chores, and filing gently can help maintain nail health. Staying hydrated and eating a balanced diet also support stronger nails. For most people, these ridges are simply a normal part of getting older.
