Dad discovered that the pool had been built over the property line, using old iron markers installed in 1962. When the pool was constructed in 1987, two markers had been buried beneath its concrete foundation. The pool extended eighteen inches onto neighboring land that legally belonged to an elderly woman named Loretta. Her father had left her the property, and although three different owners had ignored the boundary violation, Loretta had never sold the land or given permission for anyone to use it. She had even filed a complaint in 1994, but nothing came of it.
When Dad contacted Loretta, she drove four hours to meet him, bringing decades of documents proving her ownership. The police were already investigating after Dad requested a property line inspection. Although the dispute was civil, officers also discovered that Aldric had never obtained permits for the pool’s original construction, creating another legal problem for him.
Aldric paid the $8,400 within forty-eight hours. His attorney contacted Dad, while Coralie never called me. Dad eventually explained why he had kept his discovery secret for nine days. He needed time to verify the markers, and he didn’t want me worrying about the situation at work. He knew Coralie might threaten my job, so he waited until everything was confirmed before revealing what he had found.
The following week, I left Aldric’s employment. He hadn’t fired me, but watching him use my livelihood to pressure my family changed everything. I refused to work for someone who treated loyalty as a weakness. Dad repaired the pool and helped Loretta finally address a problem she had been fighting for thirty years. He never asked her for money or recognition. He simply gave her the information she needed, charged her nothing, and never mentioned the incident again.
