I accidentally left my receipt at the self-checkout, and a woman hurried over to return it with a friendly smile. I thanked her and left the store without thinking much about the encounter. Later that evening, while unpacking my groceries, I noticed three words written on the back of the receipt in shaky handwriting: “Check your car.” Confused and suddenly uneasy, I looked out the window at my car parked beneath a streetlight. Although I wondered if it was some kind of prank, something told me I needed to check.
With my keys in hand, I stepped outside and slowly approached the vehicle. As I got closer, I noticed movement inside, and fear immediately took over. I opened the door and screamed when I saw a man crouching behind the passenger seat. He jumped up and ran into the darkness before I could react, leaving me shaken by what had just happened.
Afterward, I realized the woman at the store had probably noticed the man following me and suspected something was wrong. Rather than confronting him and putting herself at risk, she had found a discreet way to warn me. Her simple message had given me the chance to discover the danger before anything worse could happen.
I never saw the woman again, so I never had the opportunity to thank her properly. However, I still keep that small, crumpled receipt in my wallet. What seemed like an ordinary trip to the grocery store became a frightening experience that changed how I view the kindness of strangers. Sometimes, a small gesture and a few carefully chosen words can make an extraordinary difference, and I will never forget the woman whose quick thinking may have saved my life.
