Why Do We See “WC” and Toilet Icons Everywhere?

Toilets have come a long way from simple pits to modern flushing systems. Ancient civilizations developed drainage channels, communal latrines, and basic sanitation systems to manage waste. In the Indus Valley, cities such as Harappa and Mohenjo-daro had advanced drainage infrastructure and household sanitation. The Romans also built public toilets, aqueducts, and baths, making sanitation an important part of urban life, although hygiene standards remained limited.

During the Middle Ages, sanitation depended on wealth and location. Many people used chamber pots that had to be emptied by hand, while others relied on outdoor privies. Some castles had toilets connected to openings or drainage systems, but poor waste disposal remained a serious problem in many communities.

A major development came around 1596, when English inventor Sir John Harrington created an early flushing toilet, known as a “water closet.” He installed a prototype at Richmond Palace, where Queen Elizabeth I could use it. However, the invention remained uncommon because plumbing was limited and installation was expensive.

The nineteenth century brought significant improvements as running water and modern plumbing became more accessible. Better flushing mechanisms and drainage systems helped separate clean water from wastewater, improving hygiene in homes and public buildings. The word “toilet” comes from the French term “toilette,” which originally referred to a small cloth used during grooming. Other familiar terms include “loo,” “privy,” “latrine,” and “WC.”

Bathroom design continued to evolve beyond basic functionality. In 1975, designer Luigi Colani collaborated with Villeroy & Boch to introduce more organic shapes and comfortable designs. This helped transform bathrooms into spaces focused on both practicality and relaxation. Today, modern sanitation relies on more than toilets alone; clean water, effective drainage, proper waste disposal, and good hygiene are all essential for protecting public health.
