My Ex-Husband Sold Hunting Rights on the 80 Acres Grandpa Left Me for $12,000 — So I Gave the Entire Season to Three Army Veterans for Free

My grandfather left me an 80-acre farm in Elk Mound, Wisconsin, with one important tradition: allowing military veterans to hunt there for free. After his death, I promised to keep that tradition alive. However, my ex-husband, Brad, secretly began charging three friends $4,000 annually for hunting access without my permission. Over three years, he collected $12,000 and even forged my signature on a hunting lease.

Determined to honor my grandfather’s wishes, I invited three Army veterans, Dale, Tim, and Wes, to hunt on the property for free. They helped repair the old deer stands and restore the hunting grounds. On opening morning, I joined them wearing my grandfather’s old canvas coat.

Shortly after sunrise, Brad’s three paying hunters arrived, expecting exclusive access. One of them, Kurt, approached me with a lease bearing my name. I immediately recognized the signature as forged. He explained that Brad had assured them everything was legitimate. When Kurt noticed Dale’s military patch, they discovered they were both veterans. Kurt then revealed that he and his friends had paid Brad $4,000 every season for three years, unaware that he had no right to sell access to the land.

I contacted my attorney and preserved the forged document. Authorities investigated, Brad received a trespassing citation, and the case was referred for legal review. Eventually, he repaid the entire $12,000 after selling his bass boat. He also sent an apology, admitting that his anger over our divorce had influenced his actions.

The following season, Kurt asked if he could return. I welcomed him but refused to accept payment. My grandfather’s tradition was never about money; it was about honoring veterans and giving them a peaceful place to enjoy the outdoors. That November, I opened his old green ledger and recorded the veterans’ names. Looking across the frosty fields, I understood what he had truly left me: not simply an 80-acre farm, but an opportunity to give something meaningful to others.
