Margaret Collins discovers that her husband, Robert, has been having an affair with Caroline Whitmore. But the betrayal soon leads to something much darker. Robert has secretly handled property documents and may have taken out a $750,000 life insurance policy. When Margaret confronts him, he claims the house was transferred into her name to protect it from business creditors, but refuses to explain further. Concerned, she contacts lawyer Evelyn Price, who begins investigating suspicious documents.
Caroline later visits Margaret’s sister Dee and reveals shocking information: Robert was previously married to Anna Mitchell and has a daughter, Emily, whom he kept secret for years. A black notebook also contains Margaret’s name, her house’s estimated value, an insurance figure, and November 2, the date Robert wanted her to visit an isolated cabin. Margaret immediately informs the police, while Emily reveals that Robert recently pressured her to sign inheritance papers.
As the investigation deepens, Robert’s business associate Frank Delaney becomes connected to the mystery. Caroline remembers Frank returning from a fishing trip with Robert with a broken wrist and bloodstained jacket. Detective Harris also investigates the disappearance of Rebecca Sloan, who was involved in a financial dispute with Frank’s company. Threatening messages and photographs targeting Margaret and Emily suggest someone wants them to stop searching for answers.
Meanwhile, investigators uncover another disappearance involving Thomas Delaney, who vanished twenty-two years earlier. Margaret refuses to sign further documents and fights to protect her property. Anna encourages her to rebuild her independence, reminding her that Robert cannot take away everything she has accomplished.
Then Diane discovers an old bank record revealing a safety deposit box containing a mysterious package addressed to Margaret Lawson. Emily reads the name on it, leaving Margaret speechless. She never knew Thomas Delaney, so why had someone left something specifically for her more than twenty years earlier?
