Why Do We All Call Them T-shirts?

The T-shirt began as a simple piece of clothing that was never intended to be seen in public. In the early 1900s, the U.S. Navy issued it to sailors as a practical undershirt because it was lightweight, comfortable, and easy to wash. It remained hidden beneath uniforms, serving only a basic purpose.

Over time, workers and farmers started wearing T-shirts on their own, especially during hot weather. Their choice slowly changed how people viewed everyday clothing, turning something once considered underwear into an acceptable outer garment. Its simplicity and comfort made it increasingly popular among working people.

Hollywood helped transform the T-shirt into a cultural symbol. Actors Marlon Brando and James Dean appeared on screen wearing plain white versions, giving the garment a rebellious and youthful image. Suddenly, it represented confidence, independence, and a new generation willing to challenge traditional expectations.

By the 1960s, the T-shirt had become much more than everyday clothing. People began printing protest messages, band logos, artwork, and personal statements on it, turning it into a way to express beliefs, interests, and identity. It became a familiar sight at demonstrations and across popular culture.

Today, the T-shirt remains one of the world’s most popular clothing items, available in countless colors, designs, and styles. Despite its transformation from military underwear into a symbol of fashion and self-expression, its name comes from its simplest feature: the unmistakable T-shaped outline it forms when laid flat.
