Her life was on the line, and she did the one thing that could save her: She ordered pizza.

On May 4, 2015, Cheryl Treadway of Highlands County, Florida, used the Pizza Hut app to order a small pepperoni pizza, but also included a note: “Please help. Get 911 to me.” Her boyfriend, Ethan Nickerson, was holding her and her children at knifepoint. The restaurant alerted police, who rescued Treadway and her kids, arresting Nickerson.

Treadway’s quick thinking saved her, but many aren’t as fortunate. According to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, “one in three women and one in four men” experience physical abuse from a partner. Domestic violence remains a widespread issue, often hidden behind closed doors.

Treadway’s story highlights the importance of finding discreet ways to seek help. In emergencies, innovative solutions like hers can make the difference between life and death.
