Melania Trump and Donald Trump met during New York Fashion Week in 1998 at the Kit Kat Klub. Despite being on a date with another woman, Trump approached Melania, a Slovenian model who had recently immigrated to the U.S., and asked for her number. Unimpressed, she replied, “I am not giving you my number; you give me yours, and I will call you,” wanting to test his sincerity.
In her memoir, Melania shared her initial impressions of Trump: “From the moment our conversation began, I was captivated by his charm and easygoing nature.” She was also struck by his “vitality” and “energy.”
The couple eventually began dating, and Trump proposed at the 2004 Met Gala. They married at Mar-a-Lago in 2005 and welcomed their son, Barron, in 2006. Reflecting on her role, Melania told FOX News, “I’m standing on my own two feet… I have my own ‘yes’ and ‘no.’”
