Actor Richard Roundtree, the iconic first Black action hero known for his portrayal of John Shaft, has passed away at his Los Angeles home after battling pancreatic cancer. His manager, Patrick McMinn, confirmed his death and emphasized Roundtree’s significant impact on the film industry: ”

Richard’s work and career served as a turning point for African American leading men in film. The impact he had on the industry cannot be overstated.” Colleagues and fans paid heartfelt tributes. Actor Gabrielle Union, who worked with Roundtree, called him a dream to work with, while comedian Loni Love acknowledged his influence in making being a detective glamorous and cool.
