Roughly a dozen House Democrats are considering various ways to protest President Trump’s speech to Congress. While leaders advised inviting guests affected by Trump’s policies, some members are pushing for more disruptive actions.
“This is not business as usual,” one Democrat told Axios, expressing the need for a productive protest. Ideas include walking out if Trump criticizes transgender kids or holding signs like the one Rep. Rashida Tlaib displayed last year. Props such as egg cartons to symbolize inflation or pocket constitutions to accuse Trump of violating the law were also discussed.
However, not all Democrats agree. “There are … constituents who feel like that just plays into his hands,” one member noted. Others plan quieter protests like wearing coordinated colors—pink for women’s rights, black for somber opposition, and blue and yellow to support Ukraine.
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries urged a “strong, determined, and dignified” presence. “Whether we are wearing pink, or black, or yellow and blue, we are all conveying our displeasure,” said Rep. Stacey Plaskett.
