Why People Are Putting Paper Towels in the Fridge

Placing paper towels in the refrigerator may sound like an odd habit, but it’s a practical trick many home cooks rely on to extend the life of fresh produce. Fruits and vegetables naturally release moisture while stored, and that moisture often collects in drawers, plastic bags, or containers. Over time, this damp environment speeds up spoilage—leading to wilted greens, slimy herbs, and soft vegetables that go bad sooner than expected.

Excess moisture is one of the main reasons produce deteriorates quickly. Refrigerators, while designed to preserve food, can unintentionally trap humidity—especially in crisper drawers. A simple paper towel acts as a moisture absorber, soaking up condensation before it settles on the produce. This helps maintain a drier environment, which slows down the process of decay.

Many people notice a clear difference when using this method. Leafy greens like lettuce and spinach stay crisp longer, herbs remain fresher, and vegetables such as peppers or cucumbers are less likely to become soft or moldy. It’s a small adjustment, but one that can noticeably improve how long your groceries last.

Using the method is straightforward. You can line your fridge drawers with a few sheets of paper towel or place one inside containers and storage bags where moisture tends to build up. For herbs or greens, wrapping them lightly in a paper towel before storing can be especially effective. The key is to replace the paper towels once they become damp, ensuring they continue to absorb excess moisture.

While some claims online overstate the financial impact, the real benefit is practical. Keeping produce fresh for longer reduces waste, preserves flavor and texture, and helps keep your refrigerator cleaner and more organized—all with almost no extra effort.
