In Palm Springs, Officer Lesley Zerebny, a new mother, was fatally shot responding to a domestic disturbance call on October 8. A group of compassionate mothers from Northern California’s Monterey area took action to support Zerebny’s 4-month-old daughter, Cora.
More than 500 ounces of breast milk were donated and will be screened before reaching Cora. Zerebny, 27, had just returned to duty after maternity leave. The suspect, John Felix, 26, was later apprehended following a shootout with the police. He faces charges for the murders of Zerebny and her partner, Jose Gilbert Vega. The tragic incident, where officers were shot through a screen door, marks the first such death in Palm Springs since 1962.
