Jane Fonda Is Not Happy About Hollywood Remaking One Of Her Famous Movies

Hollywood Revives 1968 Classic

Back in 1968, Jane Fonda’s “Barbarella” became a hit, gaining cult status over the years. Now, Hollywood plans to remake the iconic film, partnering with Sony Pictures and opting for Euphoria star Sydney Sweeney instead of Fonda.

Fonda’s Displeasure and Doubts

Jane Fonda, in a conversation with the Hollywood Reporter, expressed her unease about the remake, emphasizing her concerns about its potential success compared to the original. Fonda, a symbol of 1960s allure, admitted avoiding thoughts about the remake, stating, “I worry about what it’s going to be.”

Feminist Twist Challenges

Fonda questioned how Sony Pictures would infuse a feminist twist, considering the original’s non-feminist approach. She revealed her unrealized ideas for a feminist take, stating, “It could have been a truly feminist movie.”

Original Plot and Cult Following

The original plot, set in the 41st century, follows Barbarella’s quest for a scientist with a destructive invention. While not an initial success, Fonda’s film gained a cult following, catapulting her to stardom amid controversy related to the Vietnam War.

Revival Attempts and Unfulfilled Sequel

Over the years, various attempts were made to revive “Barbarella,” including a proposed sequel titled “Barbarella Goes Down.” Directed by Robert Rodriguez and featuring Rose McGowan, the sequel never materialized. The question remains: Will the Barbarella remake capture the essence of the original and find success?
